Goa is one of India's most popular holiday destinations. Located on the Mandovi River, between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, it's renowned for its magnificent beaches and you can take your pick from about 30 of them strung out along the coastline. There's a strong Portuguese heritage and lots of old estates dotted around the countryside that were built by wealthy Indians in bygone days. Rice, fish and coconut are the staple ingredients in most Goan meals. It's a fusion of Indian and Portuguese and the most notable dish is the fish curry, but the vindaloo originated here too! South Goa is much quieter than the north and remains unspoilt and the beaches and fishing villages of Canacona are truly stunning.
