Stretching from the frozen summits of the Himalayas to the tropical greenery of Kerala, India offers an eclectic mix of landscapes, cultures and people.

Indian Rupee

If you're going to properly explore the country it's not for the faint hearted and trying to cover too much ground is not practical, so do your homework and select a small area and aim to explore a few of the major tourist sites. The best time to visit India is between late October (the end of the monsoon season) and mid-March.

Varanasi is the holiest city in India and thousands of Hindu pilgrims pay homage to its temples. Take a boat ride down the River Ganges at dawn to watch pilgrims enter the water to purify themselves before the rising sun. Discover temples and ancient buildings (there are 2,000 temples and shrines in Varanasi) and watch out for the mischievous wild monkeys, known to pick a pocket or two.

If lush, green landscapes and tea plantations are more appealing, then consider Darjeeling with its spectacular backdrop of the mighty Himalayan peaks. The main attractions here include Buddhist monasteries, lush tea plantations and ancient relics from the Raj.
